Will local stakeholders have a free say in the review of end states and end dates for each site?

The options available for site end states and end dates could depend on a number of individual site circumstances. For example, it is very likely that Sellafield will remain under indefinite institutional control due to the extent of radioactively contaminated land on the site, while the review for other sites, e.g. Dungeness A, will need to take into account factors such as coastal erosion and a potential rise in the sea level resulting from climate change. However, we envisage there will be a range of end states available for most sites. These include restoring the site for residential re-use (i.e. housing); for recreational re-use (e.g. nature reserve, national park etc.); for industrial re-use (both light and heavy industry); and for unrestricted re-use (i.e. no restrictions on the site’s re-use). We will facilitate the decisions made by local stakeholders by providing technical information and advice on the implications of selecting different site end states. Site end states are agreed by the Government through the NDA Strategy. Implementation of the site end states will then, of course, have to follow the normal planning procedures.
