The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and Low Level Waste Repository Limited (LLWR) are sponsoring a workshop to enable stakeholders (especially local communities) involved in radioactive waste management in the UK to meet with their counterparts in other countries.

 

The workshop is being organised under the framework of the CARL project. CARL is an independent, self-supporting consortium of organisations from countries that have experience with stakeholder involvement in radioactive waste management. The project unites four types of partners (Citizen stakeholders, Agencies responsible for radioactive waste management, social science Research organisations and Licensing and regulatory authorities) in four countries: Belgium, Slovenia, Sweden and the UK.

The workshop aims to:

• Provide an update of where international programmes are up to from a stakeholder perspective;
• Discuss the regeneration and development opportunities that have taken place in association with long term radioactive waste management facilities;
• Discuss how technical issues can be made more open and accessible to local stakeholders to support their decision making;
• Discuss opportunities for developing an international programme to promote local stakeholder interactions.

The workshop will be a mixture of presentations, plenary panel sessions and discussion groups.

A record of the workshop will be produced.

A site visits will be organised to the Low Level Waste Repository near the village of Drigg in West Cumbria on the 22nd October.
